The Israeli Center for the Treatment of Dizziness and Imbalance was founded in 1995 by Dr. Oz Zur, a physical therapy specialist. The Center offers comprehensive professional evaluations and assessments and a range of treatments. It provides student supervision and is a center for research and development.
Who are the patients who come to the dizziness and balance clinic?
People of all ages throughout Israel, who suffer from dizziness, vertigo, or BPPV, often accompanied by anxiety, loss of balance, headaches, back pain or muscle and joint pain and who have not yet found a cure.
Dr. Oz Zur is a seasoned clinical physical therapist, educator, and researcher, serving as an accompanying lecturer and teaching Vestibular Rehabilitation (VR) in the second degree in the Department of Physiotherapy at Ben-Gurion University. He began his vestibular rehabilitation training studying in the United States, specializing in vertigo, diagnosing and treating under the mentorship of Prof. Susan Hardman and Dr Tusa (University of Miami). He later expanded his expertise in postural control with Prof. Fay Horak (Oregon Health & Science University, Portland). The second degree was at Tel Aviv University with a new focus on the relationship between vestibular deficits and falls in the elderly.
Dr. Zur further honed his clinical and academic focus in leading vestibular, headache, and balance centers across Europe. He studied cervical vertigo with Dr. Michael Karlberg in Sweden and explored the intersection of vestibular and headache disorders with Prof. Jes Olesen in Denmark.
As a recognized expert in the field, Dr. Zur regularly advises healthcare professionals and teaches advanced continuing education courses on vestibular rehabilitation, dizziness, and imbalance to licensed physical therapists, occupational therapists, and related practitioners.
His academic journey includes a research residency at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, under the supervision of Prof. Joyce Fung, which he completed as part of his doctoral studies at the University of Haifa, guided by Prof. Ruth Dickstein.
Building on his extensive knowledge and clinical experience diagnosing and treating thousands of patients with dizziness and balance disorders, Dr. Oz Zur developed the “Zur Balance” treatment approach. This integrative method offers a unique perspective tailored to various pathologies in the field of balance and vestibular dysfunction.
This method emphasizes personalized vestibular training adapted to the clinical and emotional characteristics of each patient. It introduces fundamental changes to both the structure and duration of exercises, as well as a compassionate, patient-centered therapeutic approach that recognizes the emotional impact of balance loss.
As part of its evolution, the approach underwent a digital transformation, enabling remote use by both therapists and patients. The digital system consists of two main modules:
Assessment of fall risk relative to the patient’s age and individual profile.
Personalized exercise program, dynamically adjusted based on the patient’s performance and progress over time.
This innovative system enables focused, precise, and accessible treatment, combining cutting-edge clinical practice, technology, and a human-centered approach.
This method was developed by Dr. Oz Zur after ten years of experience, after treating thousands of patients suffering from peripheral or central balance, problems of instability and dizziness.
Performing the exercises correctly helps the brain learn to circumvent the problem, with the goals of improving balance and preventing another fall. The method is suitable for children and adults of all ages, for anyone suffering from a lack of balance, coordination problems, a sensation of floating or mismatch between the vestibular, visual and somato-sensory systems that work together to maintain balance. It is particularly important for the older population, which has a high percentage of falls (about 50% of older people experience a fall at least once a year, which is the most common cause of visits to the emergency room among this age group). Falls can have many serious consequences, including bruises, fractures, and anxiety, other complications and high economic costs, as well. The Zur Balance Method can help improve a balance problem in a short time, whether it is related to stroke, cerebellar disorder, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy or brain surgery, or if the problem originates from the inner ear, such as BPPV , vestibular neurinitis, epidemic vertigo, or visual vertigo. The method allows one to go from a high risk of falling to more secure stance and walking, while improving the quality of life, improving balance, reducing anxiety regarding falls, and decreasing feelings of dizziness and nausea. It is possible to avoid the next fall, instill confidence and reduce anxiety with correct exercises and perseverance.
It is very important to obtain a diagnosis in the clinic to evaluate the existing problem and design the required treatment plan. The unique techniques provided by the clinic offer a variety of advanced treatments for many problems, including dizziness, vertigo, BPPV, balance, headaches and back pain.
In terms of prevention, we believe in preliminary testing and treatments that prevent the next attack. Before a fall or hip fracture occurs, before back pain worsens and before cartilage or spine inflammation increases, just before a headache or dizzy spell begins – it is important to perform the exercises and to exert pressure at specific points to reduce tension in muscles, soft tissue and fascia (the sheath covering the muscles).
The Center provides teaching and training to professionals, doctors, physiotherapists, physical education teachers, and nurses. A course in physical therapy and vestibular rehabilitation after dizziness, vertigo combined with nausea , anxiety, or instability that might result in a hip fracture after a fall (with or without osteoporosis) is given every two years for physiotherapist Masters degree students at Ben Gurion University and to experienced physiotherapists.
Continuing education is also provided to doctors, physical education teachers at Wingate ,nursery school teachers and aides in kindergartens and to nursing students.
We conduct research regarding dizziness related to vertigo, dizziness related to anxiety and nausea that accompanies it, and lack of balance in different populations.
